Medical Residency Program

Rainbow Hospice LIFE Institute for Learning

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, there is inadequate end-of-life teaching particularly in the areas of:

    1. Pain assessment

    2. Pain management

    3. Ethics

    4. Physician - patient communication

    5. End-of-life communication

    6. Psychosocial care

    7.Personal awareness

    8. Bereavement, and

    9. End-of-life clinical experiences**

To address this deficiency, and in conjunction with our agency strategic plan, the Rainbow Hospice LIFE Institute for Learning has created a Medical Resident Education Program. This effort brings together 8 medical education programs in the Chicagoland area to provide opportunities for their residents to participate in a 4-week educational rotation. This program provides a didactic and observational experience for residents. The Medical Resident Education Program runs concurrent with the academic year, August to May.

The didactic portion of the medical resident rotation focuses on five areas including:

    1. Pain management

    2.Symptom management

    3.Hospice basics

    4.Bereavement and psychosocial issues

    5.Spiritual care

The observational portion of the rotation includes opportunities for residents to make patient care visits with hospice Nurses, Social Workers, Physicians and Spiritual Care staff.

The goals of this program are to provide education to medical residents so that they are able to:

1.Identify the clinical characteristics of the major types of pain: somatic, visceral and neuropathic

2.Describe the indications, pharmacology, side effects and costs associated with opioids and adjuvant analgesics

3.Calculate equianalgesic values for patients receiving opioids

4.Identify eligibility criteria for the Medicare Hospice Benefit.
